Treatment first: the $1,500 nobody wants to spend
The most repeated sentence in studio-build retrospectives is some version of "treat the room before upgrading anything." Untreated rooms lie about bass by huge margins; no monitor purchase survives that. Broadband panels at first reflection points, corner bass traps, something absorptive behind the listening position. It's the least photogenic $1,500 in the build and the highest-leverage.

Interface: Apollo x4 Gen 2
Four excellent preamps, near-zero-latency UAD monitoring with classic hardware emulations, and the build quality of something you'll still be using in a decade. The honest alternative if you'll never track more than one source: an RME Babyface Pro FS at ~$900 frees $900 for the mic locker — RME's drivers are the stuff of engineering folklore.
Microphones: one flatterer, one workhorse
The TLM 103 (see our full comparison against the U 87) covers lead vocals and acoustic sources with genuine Neumann character; the Shure SM7B covers loud sources, podcasting, and untreated-corner emergencies. This two-mic pairing appears in more "if I started over" threads than any other combination.
Keys: where the budget admits taste
If you play, the Nord Piano 5 justifies its slot as an instrument, not a controller — and holds resale like few electronics on earth. If you program more than you play, drop to a quality 88-key controller and push $1,200 into the plugin/sample line or a second monitor position check (a pair of grot-boxes teaches translation cheaply).
